Anywhere but here

It seems all I have time for nowadays are once a week posts. It's been a busy week and thankfully, my weekend's starting early. Tomorrow's a holiday commemorating one of our national heroes.

Right now, a military group has taken over a local five star hotel protesting the current government. It's the same group that took over the Oakwood hotel couple of years ago. They've allegedly been joined by two bishops (not sure, haven't been listening to the news at work). This is happening right at the heart of the business district and people have been let out of work early due to safety.

EDSA, the main thoroughfare, has been closed to traffic and people expect the police to storm the hotel shortly. My husband is already on his way home, having found someone to hitch a ride with (the car's with me) since I doubt I will be able to enter the area. Traffic, as expected is already bad everywhere. In fact, I'm wondering how I'm going to get home.

Things are really looking bad. Can't blame the group for protesting. The country's going to pieces -- poverty is at an all time high (two children have committed suicide citing severe poverty as the reason), the government's greed and corruption is vulgar (they're not even bothering to hide it well).

So sorry for the doom and gloom post. It's times like these when I really think about migrating to another country. This situation is what my kids and my (future) grandchildren will be growing up to. That's just sad.

Oh honey! That is terrible. There are so many problems but I think the corrupt government/politicians is a worldwide malaise - some manage to cover it up better than others is all.

I'm sorry to hear things are bad there now. Isn't it horrendous what we, as humans, do to each other?
Where is our civilization headed?

food for thought...

Take Care

It's good to mention things by name. I recently read a to the point text that said that poverty is due to bad governments, no change is possible but by changing the system. I am sad that your country is in this situation. Take care !

It's weird, Menchie, but there has been nothing seen by me, anyway, on this situation in the news.

I'll Google it to get more info and updated news, but I hope it ends peacefully and that things, somehow change.

It's OK to feel blue about it. Thinking of you and hoping for the best.

Sounds so bad. It's terrible how corrupt governments are, isn't it? The UK is falling to pieces too.

Hope you have a nice weekend.

Sorry to hear things aren't so cool. I don't really see much news, mostly local stuff, so I don't know anything about what's going on there. I highly recommend Australia if you're thinking of migrating. Australians are nice, we don't care enough about politics to take over hotels, and we have pretty good weather mostly. Plus you'd be able to meet Aidan and I! :)

I discovered, via Google news, that the whole dispute ended with the surrender of those in charge of the semi-coup or whatever it was.

I guess that's good news in the sense that the military people not loyal to your president gave up.

But I guess it means nothing will change in terms of policy or any of that other stuff.

I've never been to the Phillippines, although I understand it to be a beautiful place.

Canada has plenty of Filipinos, Menchie, and they are beautiful people who integrate here very well with their intelligence and zest for life.

I'm just sayin'...

Sorry about the troubles your country is going through. I guess I should be thankful that corruption here is still the exception, rather than the norm.

oh mench. i felt so sad reading this-you're reporting history as it unfolds. i wish i understand why most honest and gentle filipinos can't straighten out this curruption. it seems so deeply embedded, yet i still don't get why it continues from one generation to the next.

i wish the total best for you and your whole family.

Menchie, don't lose hopes. Things could change for the better. Take care of yourself and your family during this time. That's the most important thing. Hugs.

Menchie, this is just awful! Just take care of yourself and your family. They're what matters. Be safe!

Hi everyone! Thank you all for the concern. things are more or less back to normal over here. have been really preoccupied with work and errands and I miss blogging. I have prioritized visiting your blogs over posting. :D

I will hopefully have more time after this weekend.
